Venice Series/Venice Series SE

The series "Venice" (2004) and "Venice SE" (2005) are about Italy, and about Germans.

The works are about Italy, and how Germans dream of it. With our own [I am German, and I do live in Germany's south] private little Italian niches, right in the middle of Germany, in the south where we keep Italian flair and life style, covertly and yet: with passion and intensity. And behind the walls: Italy, the "true" Italy, or also: Italy that we encounter on our frequent travels.

The works are rooted in expressionism, with powerful colors reminding the "Blaue Reiter". Partially photographs of a trip to Italy (Venice) are inserted, snapshots of unpretentious sites, of ferries, of voyaging, by traveling by sea, of fellow passengers, of waiting for the "Vaporetto" [public ferries in Venice].

Papier Collé and Abstract Art

The photographs that are pasted into the paintings stand in the tradition of the classical "papier collé". They are making a direct reference to reality and, in combination with expressionistic-abstract painting, let us immerse ourselves in a world far beyond reality, a world of subjectivity and the dreamed, sensed reality. That way any reference to reality is being relativized and at the same time, in confrontation with one's own subjectivity, painting as a medium of representation is being questioned.

Venice Series/Venice Series SE
